A Free Arts Program for People with Dementia

Alzheimer's dementia brings with it a constant reminder of failures and losses. The Art with Heart program is not about failure. Every picture is important and valid. Its value lies in the creative process of making the art and expressing feelings and emotions trapped inside. The ensuing sense of accomplishment brings renewed joy and self-respect to the patient.

The Pieters Family Life Center and the Alzheimer's Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Chapter have partnered to bring Art with Heart for people in the Rochester area with dementia. Twice a month at Art with Heart, Pieters Family Life Center art therapist Sharon Scott will help participants relax and explore their feelings and memories through drawing, painting, collage and more.

"Creating a tangible art project can help people recognize their abilities and minimize their deficits," Scott says. "There's also the discovery of some of their inner strengths they may have forgotten they had or the wisdom they've accumulated." For the care partners, Art with Heart can also be a time to relax a little. "It is a real stress-buster- just sitting with the art process and focusing on that, figuring out what colors you're going to use and putting everything else aside," Scott says.
